Knipex Cobra 10" Pliers
The jaw locks itself onto the part under load, so the harder you squeeze, the harder it grips, and it never slips off a rounded fitting.

Knipex calls these "water pump pliers," and so does every catalog. Ignore that. The name comes from old automotive shops, where the one job that needed an adjustable jaw this wide was the packing nut on a water pump. Nobody buys them for that anymore. These are general-purpose adjustable pliers for anything round, hex, or stuck: pipe, fittings, filter housings, trailer hitches, the nut somebody else already rounded off.
Why the jaw is different
Ordinary channel-lock pliers have a handful of coarse positions and a jaw that opens up as you push. That is why they round off fittings: the harder you lean on them, the more the jaw wants to walk. The Cobra's hinge is designed the other way around. Force on the handles drives the jaw tighter onto the work. On a rusted union or a stuck filter cap, that is the difference between one pull and a trip to the parts store.
The adjustment is the other half
You set the jaw with a push button and 25 fine steps, so it lands close to the size of the nut instead of "somewhere near." Close-fitting jaws spread the load across the flats. Coarse jaws load two corners and chew them off.
Who actually carries these
Walk a chemical plant or a maintenance shop and look in the back pockets. Operators and mechanics who have to open stuck things all day, every day, buy these with their own money, and that is as good a review as a tool gets. They are the pliers you reach for when the first pair failed.
Why 10 inches
The 7-inch is the pocket size and the 12-inch is the plumber's size. Ten is the one that lives in the truck or the tool bag: enough leverage for a filter or a trailer ball, small enough to stay in the door pocket.
The verdict
Buy it once, hand it down. You never buy another pair.
Skip it if
You are on a budget. These are top-shelf pliers.
